CompTIA CASP+ and CompTIA PenTest+ Exam Retirements

On February 10^th 2022, CompTIA has announced the exam retirements of its two popular certifications – CompTIA CASP+ and CompTIA PenTest+. It mentioned that the CompTIA CASP+ (CAS-003) exam version will be retiring on April 5^th 2022 and will no longer be available for candidates pursuing the certification.

Similarly, CompTIA PenTest+ (PT0-001) exam version will also be retiring on April 26^th 2022 and will not be available to candidates after that. These two versions of the exam are being replaced with updated versions by CompTIA. We’ll discuss about the upgradations and changes in the later part of this post.

Although the current CompTIA CASP+ and Pentest+ exam versions are ending, candidates who have already enrolled can take up these exams. CompTIA CASP+ exam retirement doesn’t affect the value of the certification and neither does the CompTIA Pentest+ retirement.

History of CompTIA CASP+ Exam and CompTIA PenTest+ Exam

The current version of the CompTIA CASP+ exam is CAS-003 and that of Pentest+ is PT0-001. These versions were launched by CompTIA (Computing Technology Industry Association). It is the governing body for all CompTIA exams and certifications. These old exam versions were launched in 2018.

To discuss a little about CompTIA and its standards, CompTIA was formerly known as the Association of Better Computer Dealers. Later in 1992, the organization changed its name to Computing Technology Industry Association.

The major reason behind the expiry or retirements of CompTIA exams is that CompTIA regularly updates its exam domains, syllabus, and courseware according to the latest industry requirements, market trends and more. This is to ensure that the candidates getting CompTIA certifications are equipped with skills and knowledge that are high in demand. For this reason, CompTIA updates the certification content along with changes in the exam domain almost every three years. Most of the CompTIA exam versions retire after 3 years.

About CompTIA Exam Launches and Retirements

The CompTIA PenTest+ (PT0-001) was launched on July 31, 2018 and the CompTIA CASP+ (CAS-003) was launched on April 2, 2018.

The CompTIA PenTest+ (PT0-002) was launched on October 28, 2021 and the CompTIA CASP+ (CAS-004) was launched on October 6, 2021.

The new exam versions are CompTIA CASP+ (CAS-004) and CompTIA PenTest+ (PT0-002) exams. Candidates planning to take up the CompTIA CASP and CompTIA PenTest+ exam can select these exam codes. These new exam versions are available to applicants for scheduling.

What Should I do if I Already Bought Exam Vouchers for CompTIA CASP+ and CompTIA Pentest+?

For candidates who have already bought exam vouchers for old exam versions i.e., CompTIA CASP+ (CAS-003) and CompTIA PenTest+ (PT0-001), there is no need to cancel or return those exam vouchers. They can still be used for the latest exam versions i.e., CompTIA CASP+ (CAS-004) and CompTIA PenTest+ (PT0-002).

When do CompTIA CASP+ and CompTIA Pentest+ Exams Retire?

CompTIA certification exams usually retire three years after the launch. This brings us back to the announcement that CASP+ (CAS-003) exam version and PenTest+ (PT0-001) are retiring this year and are being replaced by CASP+ (CAS-004) and PenTest+ (PT0-002).
