While legacy ITIL v3 relied on five sequential lifecycle phases, ITIL® (Version 5) unifies digital products and services into an integrated, continuous lifecycle model tailored for modern AI-enabled organizations. These were the five ITIL v3 phases:
- Service Strategy
- Service Design
- Service Transition
- Service Operation
- Continual Service Improvement
ITIL (Version 5) no longer uses these phases. It keeps continual improvement at its core and places it inside one connected product and service lifecycle. This lifecycle runs from discovery and design through to operation and delivery and support.
The ITIL® (Version 5) framework centers on four primary dimensions and integrated lifecycle activities:
- Organizations and People: Leadership, human-centered design, and culture required to support digital product teams.
- Information and Technology: Integrating AI, automation, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), and observability into daily service delivery.

ITIL (Version 5) keeps the 34 ITIL management practices with small updates. They now sit in two groups. One group holds the product and service management practices. The other holds the general management practices.
The 5 stages of the ITIL (Version 5) certification path
The official PeopleCert scheme can be read as five stages. Each stage is listed below with the modules it needs.
- Stage 1 ITIL Foundation (Version 5): This is the entry point for everyone. Training is optional. The exam is closed book. ITIL 4 Foundation holders can skip it or take the one-day Foundation Bridge.
- Stage 2 ITIL Practice Manager (Version 5): You need Foundation plus one Practice Manager module plus ITIL Transformation. You choose only one of the three Practice Manager modules.
- Stage 3 ITIL Managing Professional (Version 5): You need Foundation plus four modules. These are ITIL Product and ITIL Service and ITIL Experience and ITIL Transformation.
- Stage 4 ITIL Strategic Leader (Version 5): You need Foundation plus ITIL Strategy and ITIL Transformation.
- Stage 5 ITIL Master (Version 5): This is the highest designation in the scheme. You earn it once you hold all three designations above.
The three Practice Manager modules each cover five practices:
- Monitor, Support and Fulfil (MSF) covers Service Desk and Incident Management and Problem Management. It also covers Service Request Management and Monitoring and Event Management.
- Plan, Implement and Control (PIC) covers Change Enablement and Deployment Management and Release Management. It also covers Service Configuration Management and IT Asset Management.
- Collaborate, Assure and Improve (CAI) covers Relationship Management and Supplier Management and Service Level Management. It also covers Continual Improvement and Information Security Management.
ITIL Transformation is a core module in every designation. You take it only once and it counts for all three. ITIL AI Governance (Version 5) is the only extension module. It has no prerequisite and is not linked to any designation.
PeopleCert also offers upgrade routes for existing holders. ITIL 4 Practice Managers and ITIL 4 Strategic Leaders upgrade by passing ITIL Transformation. ITIL 4 Managing Professionals and ITIL 4 Masters use the ITIL Managing Professional Transition (Version 5) module. ITIL v3 Experts and ITIL v3 Masters can use the same transition module. ITIL v3 Foundation and ITIL v3 Intermediate certificates are not accepted as prerequisites. Holders of those should start with ITIL Foundation (Version 5).
Training is mandatory for every ITIL (Version 5) module except Foundation and AI Governance. It must come from an ATO or from official eLearning. The Foundation exam is closed book. The Product and Service and Experience and Strategy and Transformation exams are open book.
Recommended priority order
PeopleCert sets no fixed order after Foundation. Choose the path that fits your role. If you are unsure we suggest this order:
- ITIL Foundation (Version 5): Start here. It is the base for every other module.
- ITIL Transformation (Version 5): Take it next. It counts toward all three designations so the effort is never wasted.
- One Practice Manager module: Choose this if you work in service desk or operations or delivery. It completes the ITIL Practice Manager designation.
- ITIL Strategy (Version 5): Choose this if you lead teams or plan strategy. It completes the ITIL Strategic Leader designation.
- ITIL Product and ITIL Service and ITIL Experience: This is the biggest step with three more modules. It completes the ITIL Managing Professional designation.
- ITIL Master (Version 5): It is awarded once you hold all three designations.
- ITIL AI Governance (Version 5): Add it at any time. It is useful for anyone who works on AI projects.
Official certification exams, exam bookings and e-certificates are managed directly through the official PeopleCert account portal. PeopleCert Plus members also log their CPD points there.

ITIL (Version 5) is an evolution of ITIL 4 and not a full reset. PeopleCert says it keeps proven ideas such as the value system and the guiding principles. It then adds new guidance for the way teams work today.
PeopleCert highlights five key changes in ITIL (Version 5):
- A modern and integrated approach that works from leadership down to daily operations
- An AI-native design that helps teams work in complex AI-enabled environments
- Products and services managed together across one lifecycle
- A strong focus on digital experience for every stakeholder
- Continuity with ITIL 4 and earlier versions
Use this simple guide to pick the right starting point:
- New to ITIL: Take ITIL Foundation (Version 5). It is the current entry point and it covers the latest content.
- ITIL 4 Foundation holder: You do not need to retake Foundation. Your certificate is accepted for higher ITIL (Version 5) modules. Take the one-day Foundation Bridge only if you want the Version 5 certificate.
- ITIL v3 Foundation or Intermediate holder: Start with ITIL Foundation (Version 5). PeopleCert does not accept ITIL v3 certificates as prerequisites for higher ITIL (Version 5) modules.
- ITIL 4 Managing Professional or ITIL 4 Master or ITIL v3 Expert: Look at the ITIL Managing Professional Transition (Version 5) module. It is the faster upgrade route for you.
- ITIL 4 Practice Manager or ITIL 4 Strategic Leader: Pass ITIL Transformation (Version 5) to upgrade your designation.
ITIL 4 and ITIL (Version 5) will run side by side for a while. PeopleCert currently plans to retire all ITIL 4 modules on 31 December 2027. New learners in Gilbert AZ gain the most by starting with the current version.
PeopleCert published the ITIL Foundation (Version 5) syllabus in February 2026. It splits the 40 exam marks across seven categories. Each question is worth one mark.
- Key ITIL terms and definitions: 30% (12 marks)
- The ITIL Four Dimensions of Product and Service Management: 10% (4 marks)
- The ITIL Product and Service Lifecycle: 10% (4 marks)
- The ITIL Value System: 40% (16 marks)
- Value stream identification and mapping and management: 5% (2 marks)
- ITIL and AI:5% (1 mark)
- ITIL and other frameworks:5% (1 mark)
Two categories carry most of the exam. The ITIL Value System and key ITIL terms make up 70% of the marks together. Spend most of your study time there. The last category shows how ITIL works with other frameworks such as PRINCE2.
The syllabus uses four question styles:
- Standard: Pick the one correct answer.
- Missing word: Choose the word that completes the sentence.
- List: Pick the option that names the two correct items from a list.
- Negative: Pick the answer that is not true. PeopleCert uses this style only rarely.
PeopleCert delivers the ITIL Foundation (Version 5) exam online with a live proctor. You can take it from home or from your office in Gilbert AZ. Here is the full process from start to finish.
- Get your voucher: Your exam voucher arrives after you enroll. You have 12 months from purchase to sit the exam.
- Book a slot: Log in to your PeopleCert account and pick a date and time. Select the right time zone for your location.

- Get your result: A provisional result appears on screen as soon as you finish. Your verified result and e-certificate follow within two days.
Need to change your date? Rescheduling is free up to 48 hours before the exam. Later changes carry a fee. Add Take2 before your first attempt if you want a safety net.
ITIL skills are used across many IT and digital roles. PeopleCert lists IT Service Manager and Service Owner and Product Owner among the roles open to ITIL Foundation (Version 5) holders. Digital Product Manager and Experience Manager and Transformation Manager are on the same list.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not track pay by certification. It does publish pay and job outlook for roles where ITIL skills are common. These are the latest national figures based on May 2025 wage data:
- Computer and information systems managers: Median pay of $175,140 per year. Jobs are projected to grow 16% from 2025 to 2035. That is much faster than the 3% average for all jobs.
- Computer systems analysts: Median pay of $105,850 per year. Jobs are projected to grow 8% from 2025 to 2035.
- Project management specialists: Median pay of $102,320 per year.
All computer and IT occupations: Median pay of $109,470 per year. BLS projects about 280,000 openings each year in this group.
- All U.S. occupations: Median pay of $50,980 per year.
BLS notes that certification is usually optional for IT managers. It also says some employers prefer to hire candidates who hold one. An ITIL certificate is a clear way to show that knowledge.
