How to get CISA certification?
Professionals can earn the CISA certification by passing the CISA exam, meeting ISACA's experience requirements, and submitting the certification application. To maintain the certification, professionals must meet continuing professional education (CPE) requirements. Sprintzeal’s CISA training supports candidates throughout the exam preparation and certification journey.
- Register and pay for the CISA exam on the ISACA website. Your exam eligibility lasts six months from the day you register.
- Schedule your exam through PSI. You can book as early as 48 hours after payment. Appointments open up to 90 days in advance.
- Pass the CISA exam with a scaled score of 450 or higher.
- Apply for the CISA certification within five years of passing. Pay the US$50 application fee and submit proof of your work experience.
- Agree to follow the ISACA Code of Professional Ethics and the CISA CPE policy. Once ISACA approves your application you are CISA certified.
CISA Work Experience Requirements and Waivers
ISACA asks for at least five years of work experience in information systems audit and control. Assurance and security work also counts. This experience must fall within the 10 years before you apply. Many candidates pass the CISA exam first and complete their experience later. You have five years from your pass date to apply.
ISACA allows waivers for up to three of the five years. So at least two years must be direct IS audit or control or security work. Common waivers include:
- One year of general information systems experience or non-IS audit experience can replace one year.
- A two-year degree or 60 university semester credit hours can replace one year.
- A four-year degree or 120 university semester credit hours can replace two years.
- A master's degree in information security or information technology from an accredited university can replace one year.
Always confirm the latest waiver rules on the ISACA website before you apply.
CISA Certification Maintenance
Professionals holding CISA certification are required to maintain continuing professional education requirements and follow ISACA professional ethics guidelines to keep the certification active and valid.
You must earn and report at least 20 CPE hours every year. You must also earn at least 120 CPE hours in each three-year cycle. Your annual maintenance fee is due by 1 January each year. ISACA picks some holders at random for a CPE audit. If your CPE hours or fees are not complete ISACA can revoke your CISA. One CPE activity can count toward more than one ISACA certification when it fits each one.
Recommended Professional Pathways
To maximize your career trajectory in Tuscaloosa AL, we recommend a multi-credential approach with a combination of CISA, CISM, and CISSP certifications.
